Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the U.S. Breast augmentation can give women with small or unevenly sized breasts a fuller, firmer, more-proportionate look. Breast augmentation be performed in various ways; however, is most commonly performed through the placement of breast implants.

Is breast augmentation right for me?

Feelings or conditions that may indicate you’re a good candidate for breast augmentation:

  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small

  • Weight loss has changed the size or shape of your breasts

  • After having children, your breasts have become smaller and have lost their firmness

  • Dresses that fit well around your hips are often too large at the bust line

  • One of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the other

  • You feel self-conscious wearing a swimsuit or form-fitting top

About the Procedure

During this 1 to 2 hour procedure, the implant is placed into the natural breast pocket through an incision in the crease beneath your breast. The implants are placed underneath either breast tissue or the chest wall muscle. The procedure is typically performed with general anesthesia. After surgery your bustline may be increased by one or more cup sizes, this will depend on your goals and your discussion with your surgeon.

What is the recovery time?

You will experience some pain, bruising and swelling after surgery, which should improve during the several days after your procedure. You must avoid heavy exercise for several weeks, but otherwise you can return to work in 5 to 7 days.

Are there alternatives to breast implants?

Yes. Breast augmentation can also be performed with fat transfer. During breast augmentation with fat transfer, liposuction is performed, and this fat is then placed into the breast. This allows for natural breast augmentation without the need for breast implants. Breast augmentation with fat transfer will change the position of the nipple-areola complex. Repositioning of the nipple is performed with a breast lift.

Can I still breastfeed with breast implants?

Yes. Breastfeeding is possible with breast implants.

Can I get a mammogram with breast implants?

Absolutely. You should continue your regular screening mammograms. Annual screening mammography is recommended for women over the age of 40 and sometimes sooner depending on your family history. You will need to tell your mammography technician about your implants, so they can take additional views of your breasts.

What size breast implants do i need?

Many factors play a role in the size of the breast implant placed. These include your natural breast tissue, amount of upper pole fullness desired and if any, amount of breast lift needed. During your consultation we will work together to choose the implant size that is best for you. In choosing the correct implant, we take into consideration the proportion of your breasts to your height, your weight and chest width, the location of your nipple (areola complex), the distance from your nipple to your breast fold (infra-mammary fold), and your desired cleavage after surgery.
