How to Prepare for a Breast Augmentation Consultation

Breast augmentation surgery remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States, with countless people choosing to get larger, curvier breasts to boost their confidence every year.

As with any surgery, before you can go ahead, you’ll need to have a consultation to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. This involves finding out what you hope to achieve from the surgery, as well as determining if you are in good enough health for the surgery and the recovery.

Here’s what you need to know about how to prepare for a breast augmentation consultation.

Think about what you want

You don’t necessarily need to know exactly what you want before your breast augmentation consultation, but it’s good to have at least an idea of the improvements that you would like to make. Some of the questions that you should ask yourself before you go include:

  • Am I happy with the shape of my breasts?

  • Do I want to increase the size of my breasts? If so, how much bigger do I want to be, and how much bigger is it practical?

  • Do I want my breasts to look natural? Or am I happy with a significant difference that makes it obvious that I have had a breast augmentation procedure?

  • Am I happy with the position of my breasts, or would I like them to sit higher on my chest?

These questions are important, because it may be that you don’t need a breast augmentation to help you achieve the appearance that you are looking for, but instead a breast lift. By explaining what you want to your breast augmentation surgeon, they can make sure that you are getting the right surgery for your needs. In some instances, this may mean combining two surgeries into one. For example, many people choose to have breast augmentation to make their breasts larger and a lift to make them sit higher on the chest and give them a more youthful appearance.

Take photographs/pictures with you

It can be really helpful for your surgeon if you can take images of breasts that you like and wish to emulate with you to your consultation. These can be digital images on your cell phone, or images cut out from a magazine. This will show your surgeon the way that you wish to look, and they’ll be able to advise you if this is achievable and set realistic expectations for you.

Be prepared with your medical history

As with any surgery, your surgeon will need specific information about your medical history and your current health to approve you as a candidate for treatment. Make sure that you attend your consultation with any relevant information that you need to provide– such as dates of previous surgeries, details of current medications and dosages, and more. If you are taking any supplements or herbal remedies, it’s helpful if you can provide details about these too.

Ask a friend to come with you

If your chosen cosmetic surgery center allows it, it can be very helpful to bring a friend or family member with you. There will be a lot of information to take in and having two sets of ears can be valuable in making sure you hear and understand everything. Your friend may even think of questions that you haven’t!
