Calf Augmentation

Calf augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to enhance the lower portion of the leg. In people with a small lower leg, as a result of injury or disease, an implant or fat can be used to restore natural calf size or shape or help minimize the resultant deformity.

Calf Implants

With a calf implant, we can reliably add volume to the desired areas. The implant is a semi-solid silicone elastomer. No liquid component is used; therefore mitigating the concern of an implant leak. This 1-to-2-hour procedure is performed under general anesthesia. Using a 5 cm incision on the back of the leg, the implant is safely placed to improve the volume of the calf.

Fat Transfer

While we at times perform the fat transfer for calf augmentation, this is not our preferred method. While fat grafting to the breast or buttock tends to be more reliable and consistent, calf augmentation is variable. Generally, we see less than 50% of the injected fat remaining at one year. Also, more fat may “take” on one side than the other. For these reasons, calf augmentation with implants is preferred; however, for those who do not wish to have an implant, fat transfer remains another option.

Recovering from your calf augmentation

You'll need to take at least a few days off work to fully recover from calf implant surgery. Your doctor will give you compression bandages that you'll need to keep on for several weeks. You will also need to avoid exercise and stay off your feet. You can expect to return to your full normal activities with four to six weeks.

Contact us today and see if calf augmentation is right for you.
